SUMMARY:Bat Count: Wisconsin Bat Monitoring Program
DESCRIPTION:Help our state bats by participating in this Citizen Science program. \n\n\n\nOur hibernating bats are in great danger of being wiped out because of white-nose syndrome (WNS)\, a white\, powdery fungus on the muzzle of infected bats that causes die-offs of multiple species of bats in infected hibernation sites. This state wide survey is an important tool to help monitor the number of bats that have been affected by WNS. \n\n\n\nNo experience is necessary\, just a willingness to help. We will meet at the Nature Center\, Lot 1\, for brief instruction. \n\n\n\nRain Date: July 18\, 8:00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCovid-19 Guidelines: Group sizes vary and may be limited to promote social distancing. Participants are encouraged to practice social distancing\, frequent hand washing and to wear a face covering if social distancing cannot be maintained. All programs will be outdoors. SUMMARY:Newport Wilderness Days
DESCRIPTION:***This event is cancelled.*** \n\n\n\nDue to the many lingering concerns with the Covid-19 outbreak\, we regretfully must cancel our annual Wilderness Days event.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWilderness Days at Newport State Park was started in 1992 as a way for the members of Newport Wilderness Society\, the park’s official friends group\, to showcase their beautiful wilderness park. Volunteers lead hikes and programs over the Labor Day weekend\, covering many areas of interest. In 2019\, there were hikes devoted to mushrooms\, insects\, trees and shrubs\, herbs\, and an evening star-gazing program.

SUMMARY:Perseid Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:***This event has been cancelled.*** \n\n\n\nDue to the many lingering concerns with the Covid-19 outbreak\, we regretfully must cancel our annual Perseid Meteor Shower event. However\, you are welcome to independently view the Perseids from Newport State Park. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery August\, the Northern Hemisphere is treated to one of nature’s most popular celestial events\, the Perseid Meteor Shower. It is a result of the earth passing through the dust and debris trail of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The best place to view the meteor shower is away from city lights and areas of light pollution\, not an easy task if you live in an urban environment. Find a dark spot well after sundown\, get comfortable in a place you can lay back to get a wide view of the sky\, and be patient. \n\n\n\nIf you are reading this and are lucky enough to be in Door County\, think about watching the shower at Newport State Park\, Wisconsin’s only designated International Dark Sky Park. After years of going through a strict application process\, Newport received this distinct honor from International Dark Sky Association (IDA) in 2017. \n\n\n\nIf you come to the park to independently view the Perseids\, here are a few things to keep in mind: \n\n\n\nBe aware of your surroundings and terrain when going into dark areas. If using a light or headlamp\, try to use one with a red lens to protect night vision. This is not only for your benefit\, but for others that may be there too. It only takes a small amount of light to ruin night vision and it will take your eyes about 30 minutes to adjust to the dark. If you do not have a light with a red lens\, you can put red duct tape over your flashlight. A red balloon or red cellophane will also work. If nothing else\, keep your light pointed down so it does not shine in others’ eyes. You will want to bring a comfortable chair or a blanket and bug spray.Be mindful of others; maintain social distancing; keep noise and other distractions to a minimum. More information about dark sky viewing at Newport State Park is here.

While browsing the website\, you can also keep up to date with activities within Newport State Park. \n\n\n\nThere is one item of business usually attended to during our Annual Meeting that will need to be managed in an electronic fashion in 2020. Four individuals are being recommended by the NWS Board of Directors to serve 3-year terms on the board ending in 2023. \n\n\n\nThose individuals are: \n\n\n\nGene KennyJeanne RabelDeb FordMark Glasser\n\n\n\nYou may cast your vote via email\, nwsmembership@newportwildernesssociety.org. You may also nominate individuals to serve on the board while casting your vote.  \n\n\n\nThe members of the NWS Board hope that you and your families are safe and healthy and in good spirits. Thank you for your interest in and support of Newport State Park and its Friends Group\, the Newport Wilderness Society.
