We will begin on June 9th with the shortest trail loop (1.2 mi.) and end with the longest trail loop (7 mi.) on Sept 1st. Please join us when you can. On the final hike\, miles will be tallied and participants will enjoy a pot-luck picnic together.  \n\n\n\nThese are not meant to be interpretive hikes; the purpose is to get out and enjoy some physical activity. Everyone is encouraged to hike at a pace that is comfortable for them. Hikes will be held as scheduled\, except for extreme weather conditions. (We hike in the rain!) SUMMARY:Remembering Phil Hansotia
DESCRIPTION:Write On\, Door County is hosting a walk and reading along the Poetry Trail in remembrance of the late Phil Hansotia. From the Write On\, Door County website: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe current exhibit on the Newport State Park Poetry Trail honors Phil Hansotia\, who passed away in June of 2020. Phil was instrumental in establishing the Poetry Trail in 2010. His poems are displayed on the trail\, along with poems written in homage to him by Thomas Davis and Judy Roy. Join these poets\, as well as members of Phil’s poetry critique group\, The Wallace Group\, and others to celebrate Phil’s poetry and life. \n\n\n\nThe reading is free and open to all ages. A State Park Pass is required. The reading will progress from stanchion to stanchion along the trail; sturdy walking shoes and appropriate dress for an outdoor reading are encouraged. In the event of inclement weather\, the reading will be held in the shelter off Parking Lot #3\, limited transportation from the parking lot to the shelter will be provided for those who need assistance. \n\n\n\nThe Poetry Trail is accessible from Lot 1 at the Visitors Center. The ¾-mile trail is level\, but there are rocks and roots that walkers need to be mindful of.

SUMMARY:Bat Count: Wisconsin Bat Monitoring Program
DESCRIPTION:Help our state bats by participating in this Citizen Science program.  \n\n\n\nOur hibernating bats are in great danger of being wiped out because of white-nose syndrome (WNS)\, a white\, powdery fungus on the muzzle of infected bats that causes die-offs of multiple species of bats in infected hibernation sites. This state wide survey is an important tool to help monitor the number of bats that have been affected by WNS.  \n\n\n\nNo experience is necessary\, just a willingness to help. DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Hike \n\n\n\nHotz/Europe Bay Trail 3.2 milesMeet at Europe Bay Road parking area at 9:00am \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the Wisconsin DNR OutWiGo initiative\, Newport SP Naturalist Beth Bartoli is leading a 13-week progressive hiking challenge covering every trail in the park.  OutWiGo encourages everyone to improve their overall health and wellness by getting out and active in the outdoors.  \n\n\n\nHikes will take place on Wednesday at 9:00am. We will begin on June 9th with the shortest trail loop (1.2 mi.) and end with the longest trail loop (7 mi.) on Sept 1st. Please join us when you can. On the final hike\, miles will be tallied and participants will enjoy a pot-luck picnic together.  \n\n\n\nThese are not meant to be interpretive hikes; the purpose is to get out and enjoy some physical activity. Everyone is encouraged to hike at a pace that is comfortable for them. Hikes will be held as scheduled\, except for extreme weather conditions. (We hike in the rain!) DESCRIPTION:The Annual Meeting of the Newport Wilderness Society will be held outdoors at the park Picnic Shelter on Saturday\, July 31st at 9:00am. SUMMARY:Stargazing at the Dark Sky Park
DESCRIPTION:Stargazing at Newport; © Denny Moutray\n\n\n\nJoin us at Wisconsin’s only designated dark sky park for a night of star gazing. There will be telescopes and other equipment set up with some of Door County’s best amateur astronomers on hand to point out some highlights of the night sky. All are welcome to bring their own telescopes\, binoculars\, or other optics .  \n\n\n\nSeating is extremely limited; bring chairs or blankets. Flashlights or headlamps with red lens cover are recommended to protect night vision. It is always a good idea to come during day time hours to familiarize yourself with the area first.  \n\n\n\nPark at Lot 3 and follow the marked path to the viewing area. \n\n\n\nAlternate date for rain/poor conditions: August 10th.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCovid-19 Guidelines: Group sizes vary and may be limited to promote social distancing. SUMMARY:OutWiGo 'Trails of Newport' Hiking Challenge: Week 12
DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Hike \n\n\n\nNewport Trail5.0 milesMeet at Lot 2 at 9:00am \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the Wisconsin DNR OutWiGo initiative\, Newport SP Naturalist Beth Bartoli is leading a 13-week progressive hiking challenge covering every trail in the park.  OutWiGo encourages everyone to improve their overall health and wellness by getting out and active in the outdoors.  \n\n\n\nHikes will take place on Wednesday at 9:00am. We will begin on June 9th with the shortest trail loop (1.2 mi.) and end with the longest trail loop (7 mi.) on Sept 1st. Please join us when you can. On the final hike\, miles will be tallied and participants will enjoy a pot-luck picnic together.  \n\n\n\nThese are not meant to be interpretive hikes; the purpose is to get out and enjoy some physical activity. Everyone is encouraged to hike at a pace that is comfortable for them. Hikes will be held as scheduled\, except for extreme weather conditions. (We hike in the rain!)
