DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Hike \n\n\n\nHotz/Europe Bay Trail 3.2 milesMeet at Europe Bay Road parking area at 9:00am \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the Wisconsin DNR OutWiGo initiative\, Newport SP Naturalist Beth Bartoli is leading a 13-week progressive hiking challenge covering every trail in the park.  OutWiGo encourages everyone to improve their overall health and wellness by getting out and active in the outdoors.  \n\n\n\nHikes will take place on Wednesday at 9:00am. We will begin on June 9th with the shortest trail loop (1.2 mi.) and end with the longest trail loop (7 mi.) on Sept 1st. Please join us when you can. On the final hike\, miles will be tallied and participants will enjoy a pot-luck picnic together.  \n\n\n\nThese are not meant to be interpretive hikes; the purpose is to get out and enjoy some physical activity. Everyone is encouraged to hike at a pace that is comfortable for them. Hikes will be held as scheduled\, except for extreme weather conditions. (We hike in the rain!) DESCRIPTION:The Annual Meeting of the Newport Wilderness Society will be held outdoors at the park Picnic Shelter on Saturday\, July 31st at 9:00am. Coffee and baked treats will be provided by Kick Ash.  \n\n\n\nAlong with reports from members of NWS Board Executive Committee and park staff\, new board members will be voted onto the board by a majority of the full membership present.      \n\n\n\nMost importantly\, we will be honoring long-time Park Manager Michelle Hefty who retired in January after a 32+ year career at Newport SP. \n\n\n\nMichelle Hefty\, Oct 2020\n\n\n\nAll NWS members are invited to attend. SUMMARY:Stargazing at the Dark Sky Park
DESCRIPTION:Stargazing at Newport; © Denny Moutray\n\n\n\nJoin us at Wisconsin’s only designated dark sky park for a night of star gazing. There will be telescopes and other equipment set up with some of Door County’s best amateur astronomers on hand to point out some highlights of the night sky. All are welcome to bring their own telescopes\, binoculars\, or other optics .  \n\n\n\nSeating is extremely limited; bring chairs or blankets. Flashlights or headlamps with red lens cover are recommended to protect night vision. It is always a good idea to come during day time hours to familiarize yourself with the area first.  \n\n\n\nPark at Lot 3 and follow the marked path to the viewing area. \n\n\n\nAlternate date for rain/poor conditions: August 10th.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCovid-19 Guidelines: Group sizes vary and may be limited to promote social distancing. French (Wellesley College)\n\n\n\nWitness these 2 celestial bodies as they share the same ascension. Conjunctions occur when two astronomical objects – such as planets\, stars\, moons\, or the sun – align in the sky\, creating an illusion that they are close together when in reality they are thousands of miles apart. You’ll have the opportunity to view through a telescope and binoculars.  \n\n\n\nPark in Lot 3. DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Hike \n\n\n\nNewport Trail5.0 milesMeet at Lot 2 at 9:00am \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the Wisconsin DNR OutWiGo initiative\, Newport SP Naturalist Beth Bartoli is leading a 13-week progressive hiking challenge covering every trail in the park.  OutWiGo encourages everyone to improve their overall health and wellness by getting out and active in the outdoors.  \n\n\n\nHikes will take place on Wednesday at 9:00am. We will begin on June 9th with the shortest trail loop (1.2 mi.) and end with the longest trail loop (7 mi.) on Sept 1st. Please join us when you can. On the final hike\, miles will be tallied and participants will enjoy a pot-luck picnic together.  \n\n\n\nThese are not meant to be interpretive hikes; the purpose is to get out and enjoy some physical activity. Everyone is encouraged to hike at a pace that is comfortable for them. Hikes will be held as scheduled\, except for extreme weather conditions. (We hike in the rain!) A WI state park sticker is required for your vehicle.  \n\n\n\nPrint a complete hike schedule and log here. \n\n\n\nNeed more information?
