SUMMARY:Candlelight Ski-Snowshoe-Hike 2022
DESCRIPTION:Thirty-two years ago\, Newport State Park began the candlelight ski tradition in Door County. The tradition will carry on again this year as a portion of trail will come alive by candlelight\, guiding skiers\, hikers and snowshoers into a glowing\, magical winter wonderland. \n\n\n\nNewport Wilderness Society volunteers will place over 300 candles\, guiding participants down a 1.5 mile wooded trail section. Candlelight skiing requires no special talent or technique\, and the terrain of the trail is flat and suited for the novice skier as well as the more experienced. If you don’t want to ski feel free to hike or snow shoe the trail. \n\n\n\nParticipants should start at the picnic area parking lot (Lot 3) anytime between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with directions. At the end of the lit trail\, you will find a bonfire to warm up by. Hot cocoa will be available at the outdoor shelter building.  \n\n\n\nParticipants may want to bring a small flashlight or headlamp to assist in putting equipment on or finding your vehicle after skiing or hiking. \n\n\n\nThe event is free\, but a Wisconsin State Park Vehicle Admission Sticker is required. They can be purchased online or at State Park offices. \n\n\n\nBonfire after skiing\n\n\n\nThe candlelight ski/hike/snowshoe event will be held with or without adequate skiing snow. Only extreme (cold) temperatures or unsafe trail conditions would cancel the event.

SUMMARY:Great Wisconsin Bat Count
DESCRIPTION:Help our state bats by participating in this Citizen Science program. \n\n\n\nOur hibernating bats are in great danger of being wiped out because of white-nose syndrome (WNS)\, a white\, powdery fungus on the muzzle of infected bats that causes die offs of multiple species of bats in infected hibernation sites. This state wide survey is an important tool to help monitor the number of bats that have been affected by WNS. \n\n\n\nNo experience is necessary\, just a willingness to help. We will meet at the Nature Center\, Lot 1\, for brief instruction. RAINDATE: SATURDAY\, JUNE 4th. \n\n\n\nLittle Brown Bat; © USFWS/Ann Froschauer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll programs are free\, but a state park admission sticker is required on all vehicles. SUMMARY:Bat Monitoring: Wisconsin State-wide Bat Count
This state-wide survey is an important tool to help monitor the number of bats that have been affected by WNS. \n\n\n\nNo experience is necessary\, just a willingness to help. We will meet at the Nature Center\, Lot 1\, for brief instruction. RAINDATE: SATURDAY\, JULY 16th. \n\n\n\nLittle Brown Bat; © USFWS/Ann Froschauer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll programs are free\, but a state park admission sticker is required on all vehicles.
