SUMMARY:Birds and Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Join the Academy of Sciences\, Arts and Letters for a special evening learning about migratory birds and stargazing at Newport State Park. Amanda Tokuyama\, GIS & Field Data Manager with the Urban Ecology Center will help unravel the mystery of bird migration. She will answer such questions as: Why do birds migrate? How do they find their way? What can people do to help migratory bird populations in Wisconsin? Why do songbirds migrate at night? And…do birds really use the stars to migrate? \n\n\n\nAfter Amanda Tokuyama’s talk on bird migration\, Dr. Robert Mathieu\, Albert E. Whitford Professor at UW-Madison\, will guide attendees through a tour of the night sky (weather permitting) and share stories about the constellations. As we observe the Milky Way and other features of the night sky\, we will listen for migrating songbirds and imagine what it is like to navigate long distances using the stars to fly your way south. \n\n\n\nPlease note: \n\n\n\n\nThis is an outdoor\, nighttime program; dress for the conditions.\n\n\n\nThere is a short walk along a paved path to access the program venue.\n\n\n\nThere is no seating; bring a chair or blanket.\n\n\n\nBring a flashlight with a red lens cover. (In the dark sky park\, bright white light is highly discouraged.)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTalk: 7:00pm to 8:00pmStargazing: 8:00pm to 9:00pm \n\n\n\nLocation: Dark Sky Viewing Area (Lot 3) at Newport (follow the asphalt path to the shelter building) \n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but the Academy would like you to register. You can do that here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll programs are free\, but a state park admission sticker is required on all vehicles. SUMMARY:Q and A: NWS Proposed Improvements to Dark Sky Viewing Area
DESCRIPTION:Newport Wilderness Society (NWS)\, the friends group of Newport State Park\, is hosting a presentation/Q&A regarding NWS’s Dark Sky Viewing Area Improvement Plan for the park.  \n\n\n\nWhere: Newport Nature Center (inside the Visitors Center at the park entrance/Lot 1) \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday\, December 7; 10:30am \n\n\n\nNWS has long-recognized the need for improvements to the dark sky viewing area\, located in the day-use area adjacent to Lot 3. NWS’s concerns with the current condition of the viewing area\, especially when hosting an educational or night sky viewing program\, include: \n\n\n\n\nno seating is available for program participants;\n\n\n\nthere is no footpath to the viewing area; \n\n\n\nadjacent sand dunes are often trampled by visitors seeking the shortest route to/from the venue;\n\n\n\nvisitors with mobility issues must traverse a lot of uneven ground to access the program venue;\n\n\n\nspillover light from vehicles in the parking lot interferes with night sky viewing;\n\n\n\nthere is no power supply (other than battery/generator) to power AV equipment for a program or the telescopes we transport in for viewing.\n\n\n\n\nOver the past year\, the NWS Long-range Planning Committee has been working\, in collaboration with the DNR\, to design improvements to the viewing area that would specifically address these concerns. The preliminary plan includes: \n\n\n\n\na ground-level\, two-tiered\, natural stone seating area that could accommodate up to 100 people;\n\n\n\nthe seating area will be nestled into a grassy berm that already exists; it is designed not to be visible from the parking lot;\n\n\n\npaths to the viewing area designed to protect adjacent sand dunes and provide safe access for all visitors;\n\n\n\ndark sky-compliant\, non-white-light pathway illumination (in use for programs only);\n\n\n\na stacked stone wall along the east edge of the parking lot to better screen spillover light from vehicles\, but not to impede the view of Lake Michigan;\n\n\n\nimprovements to the size and placement of telescope pads;\n\n\n\na small\, accessible viewing platform overlooking Newport Beach at the end of an already existing asphalt path (which currently tumbles unsafely onto the beach);\n\n\n\na small shed near the picnic shelter to store equipment and provide solar-powered charging for equipment\, including a recently-acquired Trak-Chair for visitors with mobility challenges.\n\n\n\n\nNewport received Dark Sky Park certification in 2017. It is Wisconsin’s only Dark Sky Park. Park staff\, Universe in the Park/UW-Madison\, and friends of NWS have provided night sky education programs and viewing opportunities for hundreds of participants since before 2014. On any given evening\, visitors come to Newport to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Milky Way\, to identify planets and constellations\, or in hope of witnessing some dancing Northern Lights. \n\n\n\nNWS understands that the public is passionate about protecting and preserving our ~2\,400-acre wilderness park. NWS is too\, and our BOD and dedicated volunteers have been doing that work for 40 years at Newport. NWS hopes the public will be reassured that theplan to improve the dark sky educational and viewing experience for park visitors is specifically designed to support that mission.  \n\n\n\nNWS looks forward to listening to you and answering your questions.

SUMMARY:Candlelight Ski-Snowshoe-Hike 2025
DESCRIPTION:Thirty-five years ago\, Newport Wilderness Society started the candlelight ski tradition in Door County. Our event is always held on the second Saturday in February. Whether you prefer to ski\, hike\, or snowshoe\, we invite you to this special event at Newport to enjoy a magical winter wonderland of candlelit forest trails\, fresh air\, and (with any luck) starry night skies. \n\n\n\nCandlelight skiing requires no special talent or technique\, and the terrain of the trail is flat and suited for the novice skier as well as the more experienced. Participants may want to bring a headlamp to assist in putting equipment on or finding their vehicle after skiing or hiking. \n\n\n\nChanges in 2025: We are lighting two separate trails! The traditional Fern Trail loop (and its new boardwalk) will be lit and designated for for hikers and snow-shoers. Skiers will have their own dedicated trail which will be groomed and lit. (Please\, no pets on ski trail.) \n\n\n\nAll participants will launch from Lot 3 (follow the main park road; it ends at Lot 3) anytime between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with directions. Regardless of which trail you use\, you will end up back at the park shelter area for a bonfire\, hot beverages\, and baked treats. \n\n\n\nBonfire after Newport Candlelight Ski; photo by Sherry Seubert\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe candlelight ski/hike/snowshoe event will be held with or without adequate skiing snow. Only extreme cold temperatures or unsafe trail conditions would cancel the event. Event cancellation will be posted to the NWS Facebook page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll programs are free\, but a state park admission sticker is required on all vehicles. Some programs are weather related\, so check with the park if you have any questions. \n\n\n\nNewport State Park\, 475 County Road NP\, Ellison Bay\, WI 54210 Ph. 920-854-2500

SUMMARY:Great Wisconsin Bat Count
DESCRIPTION:Help our state bats by participating in this Citizen Science program. \n\n\n\nOur hibernating bats are in great danger of being wiped out because of white-nose syndrome (WNS)\, a white\, powdery fungus on the muzzle of infected bats that causes die offs of multiple species of bats in infected hibernation sites. This state wide survey is an important tool to help monitor the number of bats that have been affected by WNS. \n\n\n\nNo experience is necessary\, just a willingness to help. We will meet at the Nature Center\, Lot 1\, for brief instruction.  \n\n\n\nRAINDATE: Saturday\, JUNE 7th. \n\n\n\nLittle Brown Bat; © USFWS/Ann Froschauer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll programs are free\, but a state park admission sticker is required on all vehicles.
