DESCRIPTION:This Week’s Hike \n\n\n\nSand Cove/Duck Bay Trail2.3 milesMeet at Lot 3 at 9:00am \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the Wisconsin DNR OutWiGo initiative\, Newport SP Naturalist Beth Bartoli is leading a 13-week progressive hiking challenge covering every trail in the park.  OutWiGo encourages everyone to improve their overall health and wellness by getting out and active in the outdoors.  \n\n\n\nHikes will take place on Wednesday at 9:00am. We will begin on June 9th with the shortest trail loop (1.2 mi.) and end with the longest trail loop (7 mi.) on Sept 1st. Please join us when you can. On the final hike\, miles will be tallied and participants will enjoy a pot-luck picnic together.  \n\n\n\nThese are not meant to be interpretive hikes; the purpose is to get out and enjoy some physical activity. Everyone is encouraged to hike at a pace that is comfortable for them. Hikes will be held as scheduled\, except for extreme weather conditions. (We hike in the rain!) A WI state park sticker is required for your vehicle.  \n\n\n\nPrint a complete hike schedule and log here. \n\n\n\nNeed more information? SUMMARY:Bat Count: Wisconsin Bat Monitoring Program
DESCRIPTION:Help our state bats by participating in this Citizen Science program.  \n\n\n\nOur hibernating bats are in great danger of being wiped out because of white-nose syndrome (WNS)\, a white\, powdery fungus on the muzzle of infected bats that causes die-offs of multiple species of bats in infected hibernation sites. This state wide survey is an important tool to help monitor the number of bats that have been affected by WNS.  \n\n\n\nNo experience is necessary\, just a willingness to help. We will meet at the Nature Center\, Lot 1\, for brief instruction. \n\n\n\nRain Date: July 18\, 8:00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCovid-19 Guidelines: Group sizes vary and may be limited to promote social distancing. SUMMARY:NWS Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Meeting of the Newport Wilderness Society will be held outdoors at the park Picnic Shelter on Saturday\, July 31st at 9:00am. Coffee and baked treats will be provided by Kick Ash.  \n\n\n\nAlong with reports from members of NWS Board Executive Committee and park staff\, new board members will be voted onto the board by a majority of the full membership present.      \n\n\n\nMost importantly\, we will be honoring long-time Park Manager Michelle Hefty who retired in January after a 32+ year career at Newport SP. \n\n\n\nMichelle Hefty\, Oct 2020\n\n\n\nAll NWS members are invited to attend.
