The Songbird Garden, located adjacent to the Visitors Center, was conceived and designed by NWS volunteers Helen Kenny and Maureen Flatley in Spring, 2022. This was the ‘capstone’ project for their Wisconsin Master Naturalist training.
The garden has now blossomed through four summer seasons. Recently, a series of interpretive signs were installed around the garden to help visitors to Newport appreciate what types of birds visit the park, what their needs are, the types of nest sites they require, and other information about our avian visitors.
Julie Hein (Lake Ledge Naturalist, LLC) developed and installed the signage for the garden. You will also find her work at other locations around the park: along the Fern Trail; the Newport History kiosk near Lot 3; and the new interpretive displays in the Nature Center.
Newport Wilderness Society was delighted to support and fund this beautiful project.
