How Friends Help: April Workday at Newport

Coinciding with Earth Day weekend, nearly 30 NWS volunteers gathered at Newport on Saturday, April 24 to work on a variety of spring maintenance projects around the park. Board member Mark Glasser coordinated the work teams and projects, with input and great support from park management.

Volunteers tidied up the buildings and gardens around the Visitors Center and Service Shop; cleared downed trees; attended to maintenance at the beach-area picnic shelter, changing stalls, bbq grills, and fire pits; refreshed the History kiosk; picked up trash along the beach; and worked on a variety of maintenance projects at campsites and along trails.

After lots of hard work, we gathered to enjoy a post-work bbq lunch at the picnic shelter. It was wonderful to connect with old friends and to welcome several new faces to the NWS volunteer team.  Many, many thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and energy to help spruce up our wonderful park!
