Newport State Park would not be the wilderness park it is today without the land preservation legacy of Ferdinand Hotz (1868-1946) and his descendants. NWS recently installed interpretive signage at the site of the cottage overlooking Europe Lake built by Hotz in 1920. Hotz's great-grandsons, Ed and Eric Apfelbach, and their families joined us for the unveiling.Location of sign in map graphic below. ...

Last night we did our bat count and here are some of the helpers waiting for the bats to leave their roosts. The bat count went very well, with a total of 91 bats counted at four locations. This bat count is done statewide the first weekend of June, before the pups leave the roost, and mid July after they are flying on their own. The hope is that the count increases from June to July. The past few years we’ve seen an increase in our bat counts, which has been very encouraging. These numbers are reported to the state and is very important to give them a snapshot into the bat population. Thank you to the volunteers that came out and helped. Go bats! ...

Happy Spring! Update on conditions at Newport: road to the park is clear. Park road is clear. Parking lot 3 is partially clear. Trails are not groomed; no more trail grooming for the season. If you plan to hike or snowshoe, expect to climb over deep snowbanks to access trails. Expect 2+ feet of wet snow on trails. It is 45 degrees at the park this afternoon. From blizzard to fast thaw: this is how we roll in March. ...

Extra special thanks to ALL the NWS volunteers and park staff who lit candles, stoked fires, baked cookies, managed traffic, and helped our guests find their way to trailheads. And mega thanks to Trish and Jim Black for coordinating it all. We are so grateful to you both! ...
