The Friends of Wisconsin State Parks (FWSP) has provided much support to Newport Wilderness Society in a variety of ways over the years. We are especially grateful for a recent grant received from FWSP which will help us partially fund the park naturalist’s salary this year.
NWS has historically underwritten the naturalist’s salary at Newport. Beth Bartoli (“Newport Naturalist” to many) organizes and leads a variety of interpretive programs and citizen science data projects at the park. Check out the August Event Calendar for a sample of programs (interpretive hikes, Smokey Bear’s birthday, dark sky events, etc.) she is coordinating for visitors this month. Behind the scenes, she is caring for monarch butterflies in the park ‘nursery’, coordinating bat counts, monitoring bluebird nest boxes, overseeing the redesign of the park’s Nature Center, and countless other large and small projects.
Our sincere thanks to FWSP for their support of the naturalist program at Newport.
