Severe Storm Damage Closes Trails and Campsites At Newport

The southern half of Newport State Park has been closed to hiking and camping due to significant damage and unsafe conditions which resulted from an extraordinary wind storm event on Saturday afternoon (August 9, 2025). This annotated map graphic shows the currently affected trails and campsites:

Monarch Trail, Poetry Trail, and all trails north of the main park entrance remain open.

There is no time estimate for affected trails and campsites to reopen, but we expect that it is going to take a while. There is a massive amount of debris to be cleared. The landscape in this area of the park has been significantly altered.

Despite incredible scenes of downed trees in and around the campsites, we are so thankful to know that all campers in the affected area were safely evacuated.
