Earlier in 2022, it came to the attention of Newport park management and Newport Wilderness Society that the fire rings and Leopold benches at some of the park’s campsites were showing signs of significant wear and tear.
With the help of a $3,500 matching incentive grant from Friends of Wisconsin State Parks, NWS has funded the replacement of fire rings at 12 Newport campsites and the addition or replacement of Leopold benches at 13 campsites. The new fire rings are in the process of being installed. Lumber for the Leopold benches has been delivered; the new benches will be built over the winter and installed as weather permits.
Newport’s 16 wilderness campsites are usually fully booked during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Winter camping at the park is also very popular. We estimate that more than 3,000 Newport campers will be enjoying the new fire rings and campsite seating every year.
